Olswang volunteers have been trained and are now responsible for the wellbeing of Olswang's own bees.”
With the assistance of a professional beekeeper and teams of enthusiastic volunteers from across the firm, Olswang is helping create a congenial environment for bees in central London.
Why? Because environmental changes, pesticides and new diseases are all causing the world's bee population to decline rapidly. The issue is so serious that it has been recognised as a global phenomenon by the United Nations. Yet bees are crucial to our ecosystem; of the 100 crop species that provide 90% of the world's food, over 70 are pollinated by bees.
Thanks to our local Business Improvement District, inmidtown, we have become involved in a pioneering project to bring colonies of bees into city areas. Our Gardening Club has adapted an otherwise unused outside space at our Holborn office so that it provides sufficient vegetation and a welcoming environment for three beehives. Teams of Olswang volunteers have been trained and with assistance from a professional beekeeper, are now responsible for the wellbeing of Olswang's own bees. What's more, Olswang has adopted honey producing bees 'apis mellifera', so we plan to collect honey and sell the harvest of the hives, with proceeds going to our charity partner, Coram.
